Commendable Organization: WQAQ Sports Dept.

Most of my posts thus far have been of a negative tone, allegations of censorship and problems between the student newspaper and the Quinnipiac administration, and, while, this is necessary and important because of the very nature of the blog, those types of posts are very important.  However, it is also important to note that when dealing with college media, positive stories, or examples of high quality should not only be discussed but commended as well.

WQAQ is the student-run radio station at Quinnipiac and last year was named the Student Organization of the year.  I have been a member of the WQAQ sports dept. since the end of the fall ‘07 semester and have seen first hand the work that the dept. has been doing to not only build up their own resumés and experience for future endeavors, but also to give Quinnipiac student, their families, and the local community up to date information all of the Quinnipiac sports teams.

The station does play-by-play radio broadcasts for most of the Quinnipiac home games and will soon start doing a few games on the road.  All of the broadcasts are archived and saved on the website, as well as being aired live on the station’s website, and can be found at the link at the bottom of the page.  The site also has its own blog where weekly stories and updates on the sports teams are present, as the dept. assigns beat reports for each sport to student members.

Jack McDonald, who is the Athletic Director her at Quinnipiac, has been extremely impressed with the stations coverage and professionalism over the past few years and it is thanks to him that the station has been able to cover so many big events and games in the past few years. He has also set up a podcast on iTunes will updates about the Quinnipiac sports program and many of these episodes are taken directly from the WQAQ broadcasts of games.  He is also interested in starting up several podcasts run completely by the students about the different sports teams that will hopefully become available in the next few months.

Michael Silverman and Michael Radomski are in charge of the dept. this year, taking over for Seth Rothman and Steve Tisi who ran it the past few years, and they are looking to expand on the great work done before them and allow the students on this campus with an interest in sports to get more involved and set themselves up for more opportunities and experience in the future.  All in all the dept. is doing great work and it looks likely it will continue to do so for the conceivable future.
